RIGOLETTO/WELSH NATIONAL OPERA
‘…excellent Russian mezzo Alyona Abramova with “È amabile invero cotal giovinotto” is a high point…’ British Theatre Guide, October 2024
‘…the quartet involving these three and Alyona Abramova as Maddelena is memorable.’ Theatre Reviews North, October 2024
‘The crucial secondary roles of hired assassin Sparafucile, his partner-in-crime sister Maddalena, and wrathful, rebellious courtier Monterone – whose daughter is another of the Duke’s victims – are delivered with authority: Nathanaël Tavernier, Alyona Abramova and Paul Carey Jones do the respective honours.’ The Stage, September 2024
‘Having Nathanaël Tavernier’s Sparafucile and Alyona Abramova’s Maddalena elegantly and conspiratorially present at the ducal court from the outset was a telling intervention.’ Guardian, September 2024
‘There are evident excesses in Thomas’s production which may need to be reined in on tour, but also some highly effective scenes –notably the fine act three quartet, set in a small red room of mirrors where the Duke pleasures Maddalena (Alyona Abramova) while Rigoletto and Gilda watch helplessly from outside.’ The Telegraph, September 2024
“Even Alyona Abramova as the temptress and co-murderer Maddelena, who has seen it all and had them all, goes weak at the knees….There were other excellent voices in this production, including Abramova.” Opera Scene, September 2024
RIGOLETTO/OPERA NORTH
“The world-class components of the cast, singers we’d be happy to see in any production of Rigoletto anywhere in the world, are Russian mezzo Alyona Abramova as a charismatic if fairly stock murderer’s decoy and Callum Thorpe as Sparafucile…” The Arts Desk, March 2022
“Alyona Abramova made Maddalena much more than a vamp, bringing out her youth.” Opera Today, February 2022
“Callum Thorpe and Alyona Abramova provide vivid characterisations as Sparafucile and Maddalena” The Times, January 2022
“Alyona Abramova also deserves a special shout out for keeping the pace and giving an incredible performance towards the end of the piece. Giving us emotion, passion and quite a lot of passive aggression, the role of Maddalena was done so well.” stagesideuk, January 2022
“Abramova’s rich, nuanced singing convinced me that she is soon destined for much bigger roles.” bachtrack, January 2022
